A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
abbreviatus,-a,-um (part.A): shortened, cut back; see broken, interrupted; abbreviated [> L. abbrevio,-are: “to shorten, abridge” (Lewis & Short); cf. brevis,-e (adj.B), q.v., short; curtus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v., short; opp. elongatus,-a,-um (adj.A), lengthened;

abbreviatus, ‘shortened,’ may be used e.g.:

1.‘for the overall size (Senecio; Asteraceae) 2. for the small plants, with few leaves and flowers (Phyllobolus; Aizoaceae) 3. for the very short internodes of the lateral branches (Mitrophyllum; Aizoaceae) 4. for the reduced leaf lamina (Ruschia; Aizoaceae)) 5. for the short corolla tips (Ceropegia arabica var.; Apocynaceae).

- planta heterostyla, androdynamica a gynodynamica nisi stylo abbreviato et filamentis exsertis vix diversa, plant heterostylous, the androdynamous one from the gynodynamous except for the abbreviated style and exserted filaments scarcely different (Stearn).

- racemuli v. glomeruli axillares terminalesque abbreviati (B&H), shortened small racemes or heads axillary and terminal.

- laciniae e basi versus apicem decrescentes vel infimae paullulum abbreviatae, the laciniae from the base to the apex diminishing or the lowest ones a little abbreviated (Stearn).

- [Eulychnis] anthophorum longum aut in quibusdam subabbreviatum (DeCandolle), the anthorphoe long or in certain [sc. species] slightly shortened.

- [Calycanthus] sepala v. petala oo-serialia, ab extimis paucis bracteaeformibus, in interiora oo, petaloidea, gradatim abeuntia, intima abbreviata (B&H), sepals or petals [indefinite]- seriate, from the outermost few that are bractiform [i.e. bract-shaped], into the inner, that are indefinite, petal-like, gradually changing, the innermost shortened.

- stamina subdefinita (12-21), abbreviato-cuneata, carnosa (B&H), the stamens nearly definite (12-21), shortened-cuneate, fleshy.

- flores extus sericei, cymosi, cymis nunc abbreviatis dense congestis, nunc laxius multifloris pedunculatis (B&H), the flowers outside silky, cymose, with the cymes sometimes shortened, densely congested, sometimes more lax, many-flowered, pedunculate.

- ovarium 1, nunc abbreviatum, nunc elongatum (DeCandolle), ovary 1, sometimes shortened, sometimes elongate.

- [Cruciferae] fructus siliquatus, nunc elongatus et tunc siliqua dicitur, nunc abbreviatus et tunc silicula, rarius 1-locularis evalvis, saepius bilocularis bivalvis (DeCandolle), the fruit siliquate [i.e. somewhat like a siliqua], sometimes elongate and then it is called a siliqua, sometimes shortened and then called a silicle, rather rarely 1-locular, without valves, more often bilocular with two valves.

- [Nasturtium] siliqua teretiuscula, abbreviata aut declinata (DeCandolle), the siliqua somewhat terete [i.e. rounded and cylindric], shortened or DECLINATE (bent or curved downwards or forwards).

Microsphaera abbreviata, in allusion to the very short appendages.

Alyssum canescens var. abbreviatum: racemo brevi corymboso (DeCandolle), with the raceme short, corymbose.
