A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Vulpes,-is (s.f.III), (also volpes), abl. sg. vulpe, nom. & acc. pl. vulpes, dat. & abl. pl. vulpibus' also volpes,-is (s.f.III)), abl.sg. volpe,: the fox, q.v.

Vulpia K. C. Gmel. from L. vulpes, the fox 'from the many long awns of the panicle' (Fernald 1950).

NOTE: I have been kindly corrected by Carlos Romero Zarco (Seville, Spain) that the genus Vulpia (Poaceae) is dedicated to the German apothecary J. S. Vulpius (1760-1846). “It is published in volume 19(1) of Flora iberica, page 391, Devesa & al. (eds., 2020). The author of the etymological notes in that volume is A. Quintanar, of the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid (Spain).” - volpes marina, sea-fox, thresher-shark (Lewis & Short).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
