A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Vinum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. vino: wine; cf. ‘must’ (Eng.noun);

- vinum ex dolio in amphoram diffusum, wine poured out from a cask into a pitcher [i.e. amphora].

- vinum, in quo Muscus arboreus maceratus, “Serapio altum ait inducere somnum, ventriculum corroborare, vomitiones compescere & alvi sistere profluvia." Hoc se expertum dicit Camellus (Dill.), [wine] in which the tree-like moss is steeped, it is said by Serapius to induce a deep sleep, to strengthen the stomach, to restrain vomiting and arrest flows of the bowels.” Camellus said he made a trial of this himself.

- [Usnea nigra = [= Thamnomyces (fungus)] similem B. sed tenuiorem & parcius divisam, habeo e corbe sàlicina in cella diu reposita enatam, & eandem interdum observo ex involucro putrescente phialarum vinum Florentinum continentium (Dill.), the [var. B] is similar but thinner and less divided, I took possession of, sprung up from a willow basket laid away in a cellar for a long time, and this same one [i.e. Usnea] sometimes I observe from a rotting case of vials containing Florentine wine.

- vinum,-i (s.n.II) absinthiatum (adj.A): wormwood-wine.

Vinum antimoniale: (pharm.) antimonial wine [> antimonium,-ii (s.n.II), antimony (Bennitt)].

Vinum mulsum (part.A) or Mulsum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. mulso (sc. vinum): honey-wine, mead, i.e. wine mixed or made with honey (Lewis & Short).

Vinum mustum (adj.A), abl. sg. vino musto: unfermented [i.e. ‘fresh’] wine, ‘must;’ see ‘must (Eng.noun).’

Vinum passum (part. A), wine made from dried grapes, raisin-wine; see passus,-a,-um (part.A).

Vinum Xericum detannatum, (pharm.) detannated sherry (Bennitt).

Vinum ferri [= gen.sg. ferrum,-i (s.n.II), ‘steel’): (pharm.) steel wine (Bennitt).

(Pharm.): Vinum Burgundicum, Burgundy; Vinum Campanicum, Champagne; Vinum Hochheimense, Hock; Vinum Lusitanicum, Port; Vinum Maderaicum, Madeira; Vinum pomaceum, cider; Vinum pyraceum, 'perry;’ Vinum Xericum, sherry (Bennitt).

NOTE: Xericus,-a,-um (adj.A): “of or belonging to Xeres, a town in Spain” (Bennitt).

Piracium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. piracio, q.v.; also pyraceum,-ei (s.n.II), abl.sg. pyraceo; vinum piri, wine of the pear: piracium seu pyraceum est potio alcoholica e fermentatione pirorum confecta, piracium or pyraceum is an alcoholic drink made from the fermentation of pears; also called ‘Perry;’

- Palladii Opus agriculturae 3,25,11: VINVM PIRI ET ACETVM. Vinum de piris fit, si contusa et sacco rarissimo condita ponderibus conprimantur aut prelo, Palladius’ work on agriculture 3,25,11: ‘a wine and vinegar [i.e. sour wine] of the pear. A wine is made from the pears, if crushed and [stored, collected] in a loosely woven sack [i.e. bag to strain liquids], they are pressed together with weights or a press.’

Wineglass: (pharm.) cyathus,-i (s.m.II) vinosus or vinarius, abl.sg. cyatho vinoso or vinario; see cyathus,-i (s.m.II); see ‘wineglass;’

- ex aquae cyatho vinoso, in a wineglassful of water (Bennitt).
