versus,-a,-um (part.A): as a participle: turned towards, facing; after ad and acc., or after a noun in the accusative [> L. verto, versi, versum, 3., to turn, to turn round or about; to turn into; syn: versatus,-a,-um (part.A), contortus,-a,-um (part.A); to turn one's self, direct one's way; to turn towards; to turn into, to change, alter, transform (syn. muto); see verso; see versum (adv.); see verso (Eng. noun);

- ad muros versus, turned toward the walls.

- in ericeto Hounslejano versus Hampton, on Hounslow Heath towards Hampton (Stearn in Ray). - ad Oceanum versus, towards the ocean; ad Alpes versus, facing the Alpes.

- in agrum versus, turned into the field;

- [lichen] sporae apice inferne verso in thecis nonnihil attenuato (Nyl.), spores [with the somewhat attenuated apex facing below on the thecae [i.e. asci].

- costis in apices versus evanidis, with costae vanishing into the apices.

- pileus centrum versus convexus vel planus, pileus toward the center convex or plane.

- drupa Santiriae gibba, decurva, stylo ad pedicellum interdum verso (B&H), the drupe of Santiria is gibbous, decurved [i.e. facing downward], sometimes with the style turned toward [i.e. facing] the pedicel.

- lamina a basi apicem versus gradatim attenuata, with the blade from the base to the apex gradually attenuated, after acc. alone: Arpinum versus.

- ad axem versus, facing the axis.

- embryo rectus, axilis, radicula ad hilum versa et ideo saepius supera (DeCandolle), the embryo straight, in the axis, with the radicle turned to the hilum and for this reason more often above [superior].

- [Diderma; fungi] species vulgaris junior, fluxilis dum est, colore superbit pulchro laete cinnabarino, in rufo - brunneum dein apud nos plerumque verso (S&A), a common species, [when] younger, while it is fluid, takes pride in a beautiful, vivid cinnabarine [i.e. scarlet-orange] color, then, usually in our region, turned into a reddish-brown.

versus (Eng.), as opposed to, in contrast with: see adversum (adv., prep. with acc.), adversus (adv., prep. with acc.).

versus or versum (adv. with prepositional force, used after a noun in the accusative, ad being understood): turned in the direction of, towards a thing, usu. after the name of a place to which motion is directed (in the accusative, ad being understood); also after other adverbs: deorsum versus, sursum versus

- costa apicem versus evanida, seta vanishing toward the apex.

Versus,-us (s.m.IV), abl. sg. versu: “[> verto, a turning round, i.e. of the plough”]; a furrow; a line, row; in particular, a line of writing; and in poetry, a verse; the note, song of the nightingale” (after Lewis & Short); see versura,-ae (s.f.I).
