A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Uterus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. utero: paunch, udder; (in fungi) “the volva or receptacle of certain Fungals” (Lindley); (in fungi) “a term formerly used for the receptacle or volva in Gasteromycetes” (S&D); a cavity out of which springs life, such as the Trojan Horse (Lewis & Short) [> L. related to uter, gen. sg. uteris, gen. pl. uterium, a bag or bottle made of an animal's hide, wine-, oil-, water-skin (Lewis & Short)]; Gk. (h)ystera (E) (s.f.I), the womb (Liddell & Scott); syn. volva, q.v. or vulva; cf. parthen- partheno-, in Gk. comp. ‘virgin.’

Archegonium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. archegonio, (bryophytes) “female gametangium or sex organ; a multicellular, flask-shaped structure consisting of a stalk, venter, neck and containing an ovum; syn. gynogonium” (Magill 1990).

Uterculus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. uterculo: a small belly, paunch or womb; a small fertile cavity [> L. dim. uterus,-i (s.m.II)].

uterifer,-fera,-ferum (adj.A): bearing a womb; developing a small, fertile cavity.
