A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Trabecula,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. trabecula, nom. pl. trabeculae, acc. pl. trabeculas, dat. & abl. pl. trabeculis [> L.‘a little beam or plank of wood,’ a rafter, a little piece of dressed wood or lumber, dim. L. trabs, gen.sg. trabis (s.f.III), beam or plank of wood, cross-bar]: “a cross-bar; as in the teeth of many mosses” (Lindley);(in mosses)a transverse articulation on the tooth of the peristome, “projecting cross-bars formed from horizontal walls on either face of arthrodontous peristome teeth (cf. appendula); also strands of cells bridging air spaces within some capsules” (Magill 1990); "A transverse wall or partition that fully or partially separates two chambers within a sporangium" (Kiger & Porter 2001), as in Isoetes; the lacunar tissue in Selaginella, between the cortex and the central bundle (Jackson); transtrum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. transtro: cross-beam, bar; see beam; see lamella,-ae (s.f.I); see dissepimentum,-i (s.n.II), replum,-i (s.n.II), septum,-i (s.n.II); see trellis; see wall; cf. appendula,-ae (s.f.I).

NOTE: (in fungi) “(of Agaricales) the primordium of a lamella; (of Gasteromycetes) plates of undifferentiated primordial tissue remaining in the developing gleba and forming the branches of the dendroid columella” (S&D).

- [mosses] trabeculis apice subulatis fragilibus sub valido augmento dense et oblique lineolatis (DozyMoek), with the cross-bars at the apex subulate, fragile, under a strong magnification densely and obliquely tiny-lined.

- trabecula ligni Pini Abietis putrilagine contaminata (Hedw.), small beams of the wood of the Pine Abies contaminated with rot.

- [Ceratodon; moss] A keras [=L.] cornu et odous, [= L.] dens, inde quod peristomii dentes inflexione sua et trabeculis nodulosis caprae cornua referunt (C. Muell.), from keras, [horn] and odous, [tooth], thence, because the teeth of the peristome resemble, by its characteristic inflexion and the trabeculae [i.e. cross-bars] with little knobs resembling the horns of a goat.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
