A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Tobacco: (Eng.noun), “a plant of the genus Nicotiana esp. when cultivated for its leaves; the leaves of cultivated tobacco prepared and processed for use in smoking or chewing or as snuff” (WIII) [“often attributed to Sp. tabaco, prob. fr. Taino, roll of tobacco leaves smoked by the Indians of the Antilles at the time of Columbus” (WIII)]: tabacum,-i (s.n.II),q.v., abl.sg. tabaco;

- Nicotiana tabacum. Herba sancta sive Tabacum (Desf.), the sacred herb or Tobacco [Tabacum].

- [Saccharum ravennae] Planta pulcherrima. E culmis fistulas ad hauriendum tabaci fumum parant Arabes (Desf.), a most beautiful plant. From the culms the Arabs prepare pipes for sucking up the smoke of tobacco.
