A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Taste, flavor: sapor,-oris (s.m.III), q.v., abl. sing. sapore; gustus,-us (s.m.IV), abl. sing. gustu; see odor;

- voluptates oculorum et tactionum et odorationum et saporum, pleasures of the eyes and the touchings and smellings and tastings.

- caro sapore vix sensibili, haud amaro vel amariusculo, flesh with taste scarcely perceptible, hardly bitter or somewhat bitter (Stearn).

- latex in saporem dulcis, the latex sweet to the taste.

- odor et sapor bituminosus, abl. sg. odore et sapore bituminoso, with a tar-like odor and taste.

acerbus,-a,-um (adj.A): bitter, sour; harsh to the taste; of unripe fruit; sharp, sour, harsh;

anise-flavored: anisatus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.

bitter, q.v.: amarus,-a,-um (adj.A), felleus,-a,-um, (adj.A), q.v. 'like gall.'

sapore farinaceo, with a mealy (farinaceous, starchy) taste.

iron-flavored: ferrugineus,-a,-um (adj.A), ferruginus,-a,-um (adj.A).

mild or pleasing: gratus,-a,-um (adj.A)

garlic or onion: alliaceus,-a,-um (adj.A), cepaceus,-a,-um (adj.A)

peppery: piperatus,-a,-um (adj.A)

radishes, like: raphaninus,-a,-um (adj.A), rhaphanicus,-a,-um (adj.A)

salty: sapore salsuginis, with the taste of salt (gen.sg.).

somewhat salty: subsalinus,-a,-um (adj.A)

- herba pilis destituta, sapore subsalina, pluri-multicaulis (F. Mueller), an herb lacking hairs, with a somewhat salty taste, very many to many-stemmed.

Salsedo,-inis (s.f.III), abl. sg. salsedinis: a salty taste, saltness.

soapy: saponaceus,-a,-um (adj.A):

- sapore et odore saponaceo, with a soapy odor and taste.

sweet, q.v.: dulcis,-e (adj.B), opposite of amarus.

tristis,-e (adj.B): of taste: harsh, disagreeable, bitter.

graviter (adv.), q.v., with words relating to taste, smell or disease: disagreeably, unpleasantly, offensively, strongly.

indistinct taste: hebes (adj.B), q.v., gen. sg. hebetis, blunt, dull, q.v., opp. to pointed or sharp (Lewis & Short); of the senses: dull, dim, faint.

-iusculus,-a,-um (adj.A), ‘somewhat;’ sub-, somewhat, subfelleus, somewhat acrid or bitter

virosus,-a,-um (adj.A): having an unpleasantly strong taste or smell.
