A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Tartarum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. tartaro: tartar; bitartrate of potash, a deposit left during fermentation,from Medieval Latin tartrum, from late Gk. tartaron, “tartar encrusting the sides of wine casks” (https://www.etymonline.com/word/tartar); = wine tartar; purified = ‘cream of tartar;’ an incrustation deposited from a liquid;

NOTE: perhaps the noun may also be spelled ‘Tartrum,’ cf. Jackson sub. “tartareous’ = ‘wine tartar;’ perhaps from the ME or MF ‘tartre.’

- [Ordo XXXVII) Lichenes crustacei, non [Lichenes] Pulmonarii, seu indivisi, substantia farinacea, vel ex tartaro (Mich.), crustaceous Lichens, not Pulmonarious [sc. Lichens], either undivided, with the flesh farinaceous, or like a tartaric [sc. Incrustation, i.e. with a rough, crumbling surface].

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
