A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Stipule (Eng.noun), “processes of various kinds arising from the base of a leaf, and usu. from its sides” (Lindley); “an appendage of a leaf on each side of the leaf-insertion of those plants which possess them” (Jackson): stipula,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. stipula, nom. pl. stipulae, acc. pl. stipulas, dat. & abl.pl. stipulis [> L. stipula,-ae (s.f.I), a stalk, stem, blade, halm, straw, stubble; dim. of stipes]; cf. ocrea, 'a tubular stipule or confluent pair of elongate stipules; cf. reticulum,-i (s.n.II), sc. Lindley;

- stipulae perrarae, stipules very rare.

- stipulae minimae, glanduliformes, caducae v. persistentes, saepe adsunt et interdum spinescunt, stipules the smallest, in the form of small glands, falling away or persistent, often present and sometimes becoming spiney.

- stipulae nullae, stipules none, semper deficientes, stipules none, always lacking.

- stipulae cauli adnatae, stipules adnate to the stem (dat.sg.).

- stipulae petiolo adnatae, stipules adnate to the petiole (dat. sg.).

- stipulae scariosae v. in pilos mutatae v. 0 (B&H), stipules scariose or changed into hairs or none.

- stipulae liberae juxta basin petioli obviae, parvae, longe persistentes, triangulares (Stearn), stipules free next to base of petiole present, small, long persistent, triangular.

- stipulae interpetiolares binae foliis consimiles sed minores vel ad dentes triangulares redactae vel omnino obsoletae, stipules between the petioles 2 to the leaves similar but small or to triangular teeth reduced or entirely obsolete (Stearn).

- folia stipulis adnatis oblongis apice acutis 1 cm. longis, leaves with stipules adnate oblong at the tip acute 1 cm. long (Stearn).

- stipulis lanceolatis, ubi juvenibus tomentosis, ubi adultis glabris, with stipules lanceolate, when young, tomentose, when adult glabrous.

Auricula,-ae (s.f.I), in pl. auriculae: “the so-called stipules of Scale-mosses.” (Lindley); the underleaves or amphigastria of Hepatics.

Ocrea (also Ochrea): “a tubular membranous stipule through which the stem passes. It is formed by the consolidation of two opposite stipules” (Lindley).

Stubble:

- [Physarum; a slimemold; Mycetozoa]] intra hortorum rejectamenta aliosve acervos (Trichospermorum in universum ditissimos) in foliis, stipulis, ramulis etc. suffocatis minime infrequens post imbres obvius fuit fungillus (S&A), the fungillus [i.e. slimemold] was encountered, being the least infrequent after heavy rains among the litter of gardens and other heaps [i.e. of things] (the richest, as a whole, [being heaps of] of Trichosperma [Malvaceae]) on smothered leaves, stubble, branchlets, etc.

NOTE: stipule “archaic term for amphigastrium” (Magill 1990), the underleaves in leafy liverworts; see stip-; stipit-.

Pseudostipule, q.v.: pseudostipula,-ae (s.f.I).

Stipula,-ae (s.f.I) caulina (adj.A): “cauline stipules are such as adhere to the stem as much as to the petiole or leaf” (Lindley).
