A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Stabulum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg., a standing-place, abode, habitation, dwelling; a stopping-place or abode for animals or persons of the lower class; (for animals) a stall, stable, enclosure of any kind; (of humble houses) a dwelling like a stable, cottage, hut; a public-house, pothouse, tavern (Lewis & Short); “a building for sheltering domestic animals, birds, etc., stable, shed, stall, fold” (Glare) [> L. stabulor,-atus 1., to stable, kennel, harbor, roost (of animals) to stable or house cattle (Lewis & Short);

- stabulum pecudum (= gen.pl.), a stable or shed for cattle.

- stabulum boum a stable or shed for cattle ( = gen.pl. of bos, gen. sg. bovis (s.c.III), cow).

- stabulum ovium (= gen.pl. ovis, gen.sg. ovis (s.f.III)), a stable, pen, shed for sheep.

- stabulum avium (= gen.pl. avis,-is (s.f.III), bird), an abode for birds, i.e. an aviary.

- stabulum pavonum (= gen.pl., pavo,-onis (s.m.III), a peacock’s aviary or pen.

- stabulum piscium (= gen.pl. piscis,-is (s.m.III), a fish), a fish-pond.

- stabulum apium (= gen.pl. apis,-is (s.f.III), q.v., a bee), a beehive.

- Нуberno tempore, multis in locis circa Florentiam , ut in rimis , & cavernulis super ingentia, & tartarea saxa, prope stabulum vaccarum Domini Marchionis de Сastilionis (Mich.), in the winter time, in many places around Florence, as in fissures and cavities upon the huge and crumbling stones, near the stable of the cows of the Lord Marqui of Castilio [Castiglione, in Tuscany, Italy).

NOTE: poetically: herds, flocks, droves, etc. (Lewis & Short), hence above, a herd of cattle, sheep, etc.

- variis in locis, & praesertim in collibus ante stabulum, vaccarum Domini Marchionis de Сastilione nuncupatis le [Trafitte] (Mich.) in different places, and particularly in the hillocks before the stable of cows of the Lord Marquis de Castilione called le [Trafitte].

Comes stabuli, fifth century of the Byzantine Empire = head of the stables of the imperial court. Used in western Europe for the person in charge of the royal stud. “In the 11th century the constable (connétable) of France became one of the five great officers of state, with limited powers of jurisdiction and with command of the cavalry. The constable’s military duties and judicial powers increased until, by the mid-14th century, he held supreme military command of the army.’ In Britain = Master of the Horse (Magister Equitum), or Keeper of the Kings Stable, Officer of the stable, chief equerry, marshal (after Encyclop. Brittanica].

Constable: “the chief officer of the household, court, or army of a nobleman or king during the middle ages who often acted as commander in chief of the army next to the king and as supreme judge of the military courts and courts of chivalry; the warden or governor of a royal castle or fortress, or of a fortified town” (WIII).

Marescallus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. marescallo: the marshal or mareschal; a master of the stables, a subordinate officer to the Comes stabuli.

Praefectus stabuli vel equorum, the superintendent of stable and horses.
