A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Sound (geography; Eng. noun), strait, channel; a sound, “a long and rather broad inlet of the ocean generally with its larger part extending roughly parallel to the coast; a long passage of water connecting two larger bodies, but too wide and extensive to be termed a strait ...” (WIII): fretum,-i (s.n.II), q.v., abl. sg. freto; fretus,-us (s.m.IV), abl. sg. fretu; see aestuarium,-ii (s.n.II);

Strait (Eng.noun): “(archaic) ‘a narrow space or passage;’ a comparatively narrow passageway connecting two large bodies of water – often used in plural; a neck of land” (WIII).

- in freto Magellanico, in Straits of Magellan.

- fretum Herculeum, the Strait of Gibraltar (Stearn).

- Gaditanum Fretum, Strait of Gibraltar.

Aestuarium Reginae Charlottae: Queen Charlotte Sound, New Zealand.
