A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Shingle (Eng.noun): glarea,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. glarea; see gravel; see shore;

1. Shingle (Eng. noun) > Swedish singel, “coarse gravel (esp. on the seashore);” “coarse rounded detritus or alluvial material esp. on the seashore differing from ordinary gravel only in the size of the stones which may be as large as a man’s head” (WIII).

- glarea maritima (adj.A), seaside shingle.

- glarea fluviatilis, river shingle (Stearn).

2. Shingles (Eng.pl.noun), med. = Herpes zoster, a disease with a characteristic belt- or girdle-like skin rash; derives from Latin cingulum,-i (s.n.II), q.v.; see herpes (Eng.noun).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
