A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Scorpio,-onis (s.m.III), abl.sg. scorpione; also scorpius,-i (s.m.II) and scorpios,-i (s.m.II) = skorpios (s.m.II), scorpion; a sea-fish (Scorpaena scrofa); the constellation Scorpio (Liddell & Scott): the scorpion, other than the name of a predatory arthropod, the Romans applied this name, among others, to a sign of the zodiac, a (prickly) sea-fish, a plant (scorpion-wort, scorpion-grass); a shrub and an instrument of torture (Lewis & Short); see insects;

- (scorpio) solus (insectorum) [sic] habet in cauda spiculum, the scorpion alone of insects has a sting in its tail.

Scorpidium (from the Greek noun Scorpios (s.m.II), a scorpion + dim. –idion, a little scorpion) in reference to the species epithet ‘scorpioides.’

scorpioides (Latin adj. from the noun Scorpio,-onis (s.m.III), a scorpion and the Greek suffix -eidEs,-es, resembling a scorpion with its upcurved tail and the curved-secund leaves) (C&A).

Scorpiurus (s.f.II) from Gk. scorpios, a scorpion + oura, a tail, in allusion to the shape of the twisted pods.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
