A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Saxum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. saxo: “any large, rough stone; a detached fragment of rock; a rock (in general; whereas rupes is a steep rock, crag, cliff) (Lewis & Short); = lapis,-idis (s.m.III), abl. sg. lapide, used as ‘saxum’ but often which seems to be a stone that is modified; = Gk. lithos (s.m.II), q.v., a stone; a precious stone; see lapis,-idis (s.m.III); see stone, rock;

- lapis molaris, or saxum molare: a kind of volcanic rock used for millstones (Glare).

- loca umbrosa humida ad rupes et saxa praeprimis calcarea per regionem montanam et subalpinam totius Europae (C. Muell.), moist, shady places on rocks and stones, especially calcareous throughout the montain and subalpine region of all Europe.

- in saxis graniticis, on granitic stones.

- saxum calcareum (adj.A), abl.sg. saxo calcareo; also saxum calcarium (adj.A), abl.sg. saxo calcareo: limestone.

- saxa omnia quae observavi calcaria (Desf.), all the stones which I observed were calcareous.

- saxum (s.n.II) arenaceum (adj.A), abl. sg. saxo arenaceo, sandstone; lapis (-idis s.m.III) arenarius (adj.A), abl sg. lapide arenaceo, sandstone.

- [mosses] Patria: America austral., Andes Quitens., ad saxa in nemoribus montium Chimborazo et Carguairazo 10,000'—11,000 (Jaeg.Sauerb), Native Land: South America, the Andes of Quito, on stones in woodland groves of the mountains Chimborazo and Carguairazo.

- in saxis humectatis umbrosis, ad scaturigines, in cacumine montis altissimi Postberg dicti (C. Mueller), on shaded wet stones, in rushing streams, in the highest peak of the mountain called Postberg.

- in terra humida vel in saxis arenosis semidecompositis (C. Mueller), on moist soil or on half-rotted sandstone rocks.

- in lapid. arenac. decompositis (C. Mueller), on rotted sandstone {in lapidibus arenaceis).

Saxum,-i (s.n.II) porosum, abl. sg. saxo poroso: porous stone; pumice;

- terrae motus non infrequentes in regno Algeriensi, et prope Oran saxa porosa innumera antiquis volcanibus [sic] eructata observantur (Desf.), movements of the ground not infrequent in the Kingdom of Algeria, and near Oran countless porous stones [i.e. pumice] are observed erupted from ancient volcanoes.
