A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Saccharum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. saccharo: sugar, q.v. [> Gk. sacchar,-aros (s.n.II); sakcharon (s.n.II) [gamma + chi]: sugar, Saccharum officinale L. the Sugar Cane]; see also Latham (2008) [> Gk. sakchar,-atos (s.n.III), also sakchari; sakcharis (s.f.III) and sakcharon (s.n.II): sugar; Saccharum officinarum (Liddell & Scott).

Saccharum,-i (s.n.II) (tribe Andropogoneae), a genus including several species of tall perennial grasses called ‘sugarcanes’ used in sugar production in the warm temperate to tropical regions of Southern Asia.

- Dulcis sapor gustu suavis atque jucundus oblectat, nullaque qualitate exuperante molestus est. Ejusmodi conspicuus est in Saccharo, melle, glycyrrhiza, &c. (Ray), ‘dulcis’ [i.e. sweet, not bitter] is a taste pleasant in flavor, and also as it is pleasant it delights, and in no overwhelming quality is it unpleasant. It is of such a kind that is conspicuous in Sugar, honey, glycyrrhiza [i.e. licorice], etc.

- superficie magis plicato - gyrosa, colore constanter et persistenter sordide fulvo semipellucente, Sacchari crystallizati speciem praebente, with the surface back-and-forth-plicate, with a color constantly and persistently dirty brown, semipellucid, displaying a sort of crystallized sugar.

- Isaria saccharina (a fungus): mendax sacchari strati aemulatrix, a deceptive simulator of a layer of sugar.

- Usus medic. Anthelminthicus pro infantibus: fructus cum Saccharo esus (Swartz), medical use. An anthelminthic [i.e. vermifuge] for infants: the fruit eaten with sugar.

- [FEUILLEA cordifolia] Planta tota amarissima, praecipue semina. Äntitoxica, Antisyphilitica, emmenagoga, stomachica. Infusionis ex nucleis, in Spiritu Sacchari maceratis, cochlear majus adhiberi potest. Dosis aucta purgans, interdum emética (Swartz), the entire plant very [bitter], especially the seeds. [The plant] antitoxic [i.e. counteracting poison], antisyphilitic [i.e. counteracting syphilis], emmenagogic [promoting menstrual discharge], stomachic [a tonic for the stomach]. From an infusion of the kernels, macerated [i.e. softened by soaking] in rum, a large spoonfull [i.e. a tablespoon] can be used. An enlargement of the dose purges, sometimes an emetic (i.e. causing vomiting].

Elaeosaccharum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. elaeosaccharo, a trituration of a volatile oil with sugar (Bennett).

Faex,-cis (s.f.III) sacchari, treacle (pharm. Bennett); also theriaca,-ae (s.f.I) (Bennett).

Frustillum,-i (s.n.II) sacchari, a fragment or piece of sugar (saccharum,-i (s.n.II).

Hordei saccharum: (pharm.) barley sugar [sugar of barley] (Bennett).

Lac, gen.sg. lactis (s.n.III) sacchari [= gen.sg] , abl. sg. lacte sacchari, milk sugar.

Lactosum,-i (s.n.II) = (pharm.) saccharum lactis (Bennett).

Sacchari faex,-cis (s.f.III): (pharm.) molasses [sacchari = gen.sg. saccharum].

Saccharum fuscum (adj.A): brown sugar.

Saccharum purificatum [=refined sugar]= (pharm.) sucrose.

Spiritus,-us (s.m.IV) sacchari: (pharm.) rum (Bennett).

SACCHARUM officinale, S. ravennae.

Saccharomyces Meyen ex Hansen, S. cerevisiae Meyen ex Hansen: 'brewer's yeast' used in fermentations, as in the making of beer and bread; Saccharomycodes.

Acer saccharum Marsh. the Sugar Maple; “Neutral salts. Pure sugar is obtained from Saccharum officinarum, Acer saccharinum ...” (Willdenow).

(Aceraceae:): Acer saccharophorum, sugar-bearing; Saccharodendron saccharinum Sacchrosphendamnus saccharinus

Saccharum crystallinum (adj.A), abl. sg. saccharo crystallino; saccharum crystallizatum,-a,-um (adj.A): sugar;

- [Tremella spiculosa var. saccharina; fungi] colore constanter et persistenter sordide fulvo semipellucente, Sacchari crystallizati (braunen Kandelzuckers)speciem praebente (S&A), with the color constantly and persistently a dirty fulvus [yellowish-brown], halfway transparent, displaying a sort of crystallized sugar.

- Isaria saccharina (a fungus): mendax sacchari strati aemulatrix, a deceptive simulator of a layer of sugar.
