A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Rubigo,-inis (s.f.III), abl.sg. rubigine; also robigo,-inis (s.f.III), abl.sg. robigine (robus = ruber; “formed like aerugo, ferrugo), the rust of metals; also rust, blight, mildew, smut, moldiness (on grain); the deposit, mold, etc. that collects on millstones; on the teeth; an ulcer in a wound; a sore, ulcer; rust (cf. senescence) (Lewis & Short); see –ugo,-inis (s.f.III).

Rubigo, or rust, appears on the leaves and stems of many plants. It consists of yellow or brown stains, which, when touched, give out a powder of the same colour which soils. Microscopical examination has shewn, that the rust-like matter is a small fungus, which is called Aecidium, and the seed of which form this brownish soiling powder. Willdenow
