A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Pyxidium,-ii (s.n.iI), abl.sg. pyxidio; pyxidium; a small pyxis; = pyxidula,-ae (s.f.I); “a capsular fruit (as in the plantain) that dehisces around its circumference so that the upper portion falls off like a cap or lid”(WIII); a small circumscissile capsule: pyxidium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. pyxidio, nom.& acc. pl. pyxidia [> L. & Gk. dim. pyxis,-idis (s.f.III), q.v.]; see capsule.

“The fruit of Lecythis is a large pyxidium, as big as a child’s head, and, with its operculum, somthing resembles an oil-jar, whence the generic name ... the large seed-vessel full of seeds has been called the “monkey’s porridge-pot” (Burnett).

Pyxidium = Diplotegium, q,v,; = Pyxis,-idis (s.f.III); Capsula circumscissa. Fruit dry, globular, opening of itself into two hemispherical valves, by a transverse horizontal suture. The Amphora, is the lower valve attached to the peduncle; the Cover, or Operculum, the upper valve which is detached when ripe” Pyxidia may be globular, roundish (subrotunda); cylindric, ovoid, one-, two- celled; two- many-seeded (S. Gray).

(fungus) Pyxidium,-ii (s.n.II), S.F. Gray “based on certain Myxomycetes, fide Sacc.” (Ainsworth & Bisby). Pyxidium,-ii (s.n.II), the Goblet-mould (Gasteromyceae) (S.Gray).
