A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Psora,-ae (s.f.I): = Gk. psOra, the itch, mange = L. scabies (Lewis & Short); “a morbid condition of the skin marked by itching” (Glare); the itch, mange; syn. scabies,-iei (s.f.V), acc.sg. scabiem, abl. sg. scabie, ‘scabies;’ sarna,-ae (s.f.I); see ‘scab’ (Eng.noun); cf. impetigo (also inpetigo),-inis (s.f.III).

Psora (Eng.noun): (medicine, obsolete) a cutaneous or skin disease, especially psoriasis, scabies, or mange.

Psoriasis (Eng.noun): (medicine) a noncontagious disease whose main symptom is gray or silvery flaky patches on the skin which are red and inflamed underneath when scratched (Wictionary).

Psoricum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. psorico; also psoricon,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. psorico:= Gk. psOrikon: “a remedy for the itch” (Lewis & Short); “a medicament for the relief of itching” (Glare).

psoricus,-a,-um (adj.A): = Gk. psOricos, “of or for the itch or mange” (Lewis & Short);

- medicamentum,-i (s.n.II) psoricum (adj.A): a medicament [i.e. remedy, medicine] good for the itch or mange (Lewis & Short).

- [Chelidonium majus] Lobelius raro intus sumendam sentit Chelidoniam, sed commodius foris utendam ad impetigines & psoras puerorum (Ray), [Matthaeus] Lobelius unusually thinks Chelidonia is to be taken INTERNALLY, but more properly it is to be used externally for impetigo and the psora [i.e. psoriasis] of children.

NOTE: Lobelius: Mathias de l’Obel, Mathias de Lobel, Matthaeus Lobelius (1538-1616), Flemish physician and botanist (Wikipedia); genus (Lobelia) and family (Lobeliaceae) named after him.Flemish physician and botanist (1538-1616).

- Lepras idem et furunculos et lichenas et psoras emendat” (Pliny), [they say the same] heals [i.e. remedies or cures] leprosies, both boils and lichens [i.e. pustulose skin diseases] and manges.

Psoralea L. Scurf-pea, the herbs “usually sprinkled all over or roughened with glandular dots or points; roots sometimes tuberous and farinaceous. (Name from the Greek psoraleos, ‘scabby,’ from the glands or dots) (Fernald 1950).

[a lichen] Psora rubiformis, Fishscale Lichen. Genus Psora (thalli covered with subfoliose squamules; cf. Psoroma,-atis (s.n.III), species with thalli covered with imbricate, granulose squamules; and Psorotichia,-ae (s.f.I), species of which have thalli composed varously of minute granules, coarsely granulose crusts, nodules or squamules.
