A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Piper, gen. sg. piperis (s.n.III), acc. sg. piper, abl.sg. pipere: pepper; = Gk. peperi; pepper “the fruit of the pepper-plant, Piper nigrum or other species; piper nigrum, the fruit of Piper nigrum dried before ripening; piper album, the same, ripened or dehusked; piper rotundum, the same, as dist. From the next; piper longum, the fruit of Piper officinarum” (Glare);

- asperissimum piper, a most harsh [i.e. pungent, hot, spicy] pepper; cf. asper,-era,-erum (adj.A), harsh, rough.

- [sapor] sapor acer est, qui linguam & os acrimonya ferit atque compungit, simulque calfacit & interdum quasi exurit: is maxime conspicuus est in Pipere, Pyrethro & Euphorbio (Ray), a taste is ‘sharp’ which strikes the tongue and mouth with pungency [i.e. a piercing or biting quality] and stings them, and at the same time burns and sometimes almost sets them on fire: this is most conspicuous in Pepper, Pyrethrum and Euphorbia.

- [Nasturtium supinum; Lepidium latifolium]notae hujus sunt folia integra magna, flosculi parvi albi, siliquae itidem parvae, radix reptatrix, odor & sapor piperis” (Ray), the characters of this are the leaves entire [i.e. simple], large, the florets small, white, the siliques likewise small, the root a creeper, the odor and taste of pepper.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
