A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Peridiole, “a membrane by which the spores of some Algals are immediately covered. Also the diminutive of Peridium, a secondary and interior peridium” (Lindley); (fungi)“a chamber of the gleba forming a nest of spores, free or attached by a funicle within the peridium of the sporophore” (Jackson); (in fungi) “(esp. of Nidulariaceae), a division of the gleba having a separate wall, frequently acting as a unit for distribution” (Ainsworth & Bisby); (in fungi) “a small seedlike or egglike segregation of the gleba with a distinct wall, acting as a unit for distribution, as in the Nidulariaceae” (S&D): peridiolum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. peridiolo [dim. of peridion, which is itself a dim. of pera,-ae (s.f.I), pouch, wallet]; see gleba,-ae (s.f.I) and glebula,-ae (s.f.I);

- [Licea; fungi] Columellam veram (i.e. peridiolo proprio distincto instructam, pulvere discolore farctam) nullam detegere licuit (S&A), it was permitted to discover no the true colummella (i.e. provided with a proper distinct peridiole, packed with a powder of a distinctly different color).

- (fungus) sunt ista peridiola initio minuta, mollissima, pulposa, extus intusque unicolora laete flava (S&A), those peridioles in the beginning are minute, very soft, pulpy, both inside and outside of one color, a bright yellow.

Pisolithus [Sclerodermataceae; fungi]

- [fungi; a caption to plate I: Piso1ithus arenarius] exemplum mediocre basi abruptum (a) integrum; (b) verticaliter sectum, ut peridiola summa matura pulveracea, media etiamnum succulenta etc. visum subeant (S&A), an average specimen broken off at the base (a) entire; (b) sectioned vertically, seen so that the topmost mature, pulveraceous [i.e. powdery] peridioles may succeed the middle ones, [which are] at this time, succulent [i.e. fleshy, juicy], etc.

- [Pisolithus; fungi] peridium commune caulescens, varie demum ruptum, includens peridiola numerosa, intra substantiam fibrosam celluliseda (S&A), [the common peridium caulescent [i.e. developing a stem], then ruptured in different ways, enclosing numerous peridioles, embedded [or seated] on cells within a fibrose substance [i.e. matrix].

- [Pisolithus; fungi] tota quanta nimirum cellulis scatet innumeris, variae magnitudinis ac formae; quarum singulae peridiola singula laxius fovent, ita ut haec facile exglubi, cellulaeque dein ipsae vacuae conspici possint (S&A), the whole quantity is certainly overflowing with innumerable cells, of different sizes and shapes; each one of which enfolds each single peridiole more loosely, in such a way that these [peridioles] may be easily deprived of their covering [i.e. the peridium], and then the empty cells themselves might be examined.

- [fungi] Sunt ista peridiola initio minuta, mollissima, pulposa, extus intusque unicolora laete flava: paullatim inde in formam plerumque ovato - oblongam, ob situm arctum diversimode compressam, excrescunt (S&A), those are peridioles at the beginning minute, very soft [i.e. pliant], pulpy [i.e. soft and juicy], both inside and outside unicolorous [i.e. of a single color], with a lively yellow color; little by little [i.e. gradually]] from that point they grow up usually ovately-oblong in form, compressed in various ways due to their tight surroundings.

- [Pisolithus; fungus] Cortice communi demum varie diffracto, peridiolisque vulneri accumbentibus simul etiam laesis, pulvis carcere suo liberatus longe lateque dispergitur (S&A), with the communal cortex [i.e. peridium] then broken off in different ways, and with the peridioles lying along beside it broken also, at the same time, by the injury, the powder freed from its own confines is dispersed far and wide.

NOTE: (in fungi): Gleba chamber: “a lens-shaped, gleba-bearing structure in a nidulariaceous fruit body (Lohwag, 1941); apparently the same as ‘peridiole’” (S&D).

NOTE: in Cyathus, the Bird’s Nest fungus, “the peridiola are fixed to the peridium by threads (funiculi)” (Ainsworth & Bisby).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
