A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Pedemontium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. pedemontio; also Pedemons,-montis (s.m.III), abl.sg. pedemonte: a foothill; a piedmont (single); pedemontes,-montium (pl.m.III): a piedmont (collective) [> L. pes, gen.sg.pedis, ‘foot’ + mons, gen.sg., montis, ‘mountain’];

adj:. pedemontanus,-a,-um (adj.A),q.v.: of or relating to a piedmont.

Pedemont (Eng.noun), also piedmont: a gentle slope descending down from the base of mountains (i.e. high altitude or highlands) to a region of flat land lower in altitude; an elevated plateau region transitional between the base of a mountain and a lower plain.

The Piedmont, in northwesternern Italy abutting on the Alpes; also a region in the eastern United States between the Atlantic coastal plain and the Appalachian Mountains.

- ad pedem montium, at the foot of the mountains, such as the Alps.

- in asperis editis montis Baldi, Alpium Helvetiae, Pedemontii, etc., in the high, rugged places of Mount Baldus, of the Alps of Switzerland, the Pedemont, etc.

- pedemontio, at the mountain’s foot.

- pedemonte, at the mountain’s foot.

- in summo Pedemontis jugo Tendae dicto (DeCandolle), on the highest ridge of the Piedemont called the Tenda.

- in collinis apricis Pedemontii et Mauritaniae (DeCandolle), in the hilly open places of the Piedemont and Mauritania.

Stationes plantarum Pedemontio indigenarum (Jean Lavy, 1801); the stations [i.e. localities or habitats] of the indigenous [i.e.native] plants of the Piedemont.

Halipedum -i (s.n.II), q.v., abl.sg. halipedo: a plain by the sea.
