A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Pear (fruit): pirum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. piro, also pyrum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. pyro; volaemum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. volaemo; volemum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. volemo: “the name of a large kind of pear” (Glare); = Gk. apion (s.n.II), the pear fruit; see pirum,-i (s.n.II).

Pear wine, Perry: see piracium,-ii (s.n.II).

Apion (s.n.II), the Greek word for ‘pear’ = L. pirum,-i (s.n.II);

Apios (s.f.II), the pear tree = L. pirus,-i (s.f.II); see pear (tree) [note gender = feminine].

Crataegus apiomorpha Sarg. ‘pear-shaped,’ ‘from the obovoid fruit’ (Fernald 1950) > Gk. apion (s.n.II), ‘a pear’ + morphE, shape.

Apios,-ii (s.f.II), abl. sg. Apio, Groundnut; “Name apios, Greek for pear; from the somewhat pyriform tuberous enlargements of the rootstock” (Fernald 1950).

Perhaps also the mushroom Lactarius volemus, with orange-brown to light orange-buff cap.

NOTE: Lewis and Short refer spellings of pyrum and pyrus to pirum and pirus.

pyrinus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.: of or belonging to pears.

pyriodorus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.: smelling of, with the odor of Pears (Pyrus).

Pyrus,-i (s.f.II) L., abl. sg. Pyro, a genus including, according to Fernald (1950) following “others of recognized good judgment” such as DeCandolle, Eichler, Bentham & Hooker ... et al., the genera Malus, Sorbus and Aronia;

- [fungus] In Pyri communis, sylvestris aeque ac hortensis, foliis hinc inde frequens (S&A), the wild and also the garden, frequent here and there on the leaves of Pyrus communis.

- [fungus] In foliis Pyri Mali hortensis haud infrequens (S&A), on the garden trees on the leaves of Pyrus Malus hardly infrequent.

- [fungus] [var.] hactenus nonnisi semel in cavitate caudicis Pyri sylvestris (S&A), up to now except one time in a cavity of the trunk of Pyrus sylvestris.

- [fungi] arbores hortorum ac pomariorum vetustiores languidas male saepe vexantes; in Pyris nostratibus minus frequenter, ut videtur, obviae (S&A), the withered trees of gardens and older orchards often badly injuring; on our Pyrus [sc. trees] less frequently, it seems, encountered.

[fungus] Peziza Pyri (of pears)

Pear (Eng.noun) (tree): pirus,-i (s.f.II), abl. sg. piro, also pyrus,-i (s.f.II), abl.sg. pyro; = Greek apios (s.f.II), ‘a pear-tree;’

NOTE: gender = feminine.

- semel, ineunte Januario, in pyris sub dio projectis (S&A), one time, January coming in, on a pear tree out-stretched under the open sky.

- [Lichen Pulmonarius] sicuti in Boboli Viridario ad Pyros (Mich.), just as on the pear trees in the Viridarium of Boboli.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
