A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Papilla (Eng.noun): papilla,-ae (s.f.), abl.sg. papilla, nom. pl. papillae, dat.& abl.pl. papillis: “soft, oblong, superficial glands. Also the aciculae of certain Fungals” (Lindley); “1. Soft, puperficial glands or protuberances; 2. ‘also the aciculae of certain Fungals’ (Lindley” (Jackson); 'a nipple, teat on the breast of human beings and of animals; in poetry, the breast; a pustule, pimple; a rose-bud;' (in mosses) a minute protuberance that may be simple, forked, C-shaped; a pustula (s.f.I), q.v., is larger than a papilla [> L. papilla,-ae (s.f.I), dim. of papula, a pustule, pimple (Lewis & Short); see thele; thel-, thelo-; -thelium,-ii (s.n.II): in Gk. comp., nipple- [> Gk. thElE, fem., ‘the part of the breast which gives suck, the teat, nipple; papilla]; see mamilla, prorula, scindula, verruca; see swelling (noun);

NOTE: = papula,-ae (s.f.I), q.v. (Lindley); pustula (s.f.I), q.v., is larger than a papilla.

- thelecarpus, with a nipple-like fruit; thelephorus, bearing nipple-like projections; thelespermus, with seeds having nipple-like projections (Stearn).

- quaque cellula foliari papillas 1-2 rectas solidas gerente, with each leaf cell bearing 1-3 erect solid papillae.

- petala oblonga, triente basali papillis prasinis humilibus seriatis tecta, petals oblong, in the basal third, covered with low, leek-green papillae in rows.

Coronate Papillae, “growths with an appearance of crown-like cells at their apex (Solereder)” (Jackson): papilla,-ae (s.f.I) coronata.

Mammilla,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., a coarse papilla associated with a rounded, bulging lumen in the leaf cells, surmounted with a shallow projection.

Papilla,-ae (s.f.I) dehiscentiae (gen.sg. of dehiscentia,-ae); also porus,-i (s.f.II) dehiscentiae, pore of dehiscence: dehiscence papilla: in fungi, “(of Blastocladiaceae), a small rounded projection on the surface of a zoosporangium or gametangium, later becoming a dehiscence pore” (Ainsworth & Bisby).

Prorula (Eng.noun), q.v.: prorula,-ae (s.f.I), (generally in mosses) a papilla formed by the projection of a leaf laminal cell end.

Scindula,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. scindula: (especially in mosses) a papilla formed by the protrusion of a cell end; syn. prorula,-ae (s.f.I).

Verrucula,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. verrucula: small wart [> L. verrucula,-ae (s.f.I): a little eminence; a small wart (Lewis & Short)].

NOTE: papillae seem to refer to the prominences on a breast (the nipple), whereas the mamilla tends to be a larger prominence, such as a breast, a bubble- or small mound-like prominence.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
