A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Panicum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. panico: “Italian panic-grass, Panicum Italicum Linn. (Lewis & Short).

Panicum,-i (s.n.II), L. the genus Panic-grass, “name from the Latin ‘panus,’ an ear of millet” (Fernald 1950) [> L. panus,-i (s.m.II), q.v.]

Millet = Panicum miliaceum L. (Fernald 1950); see millet.

Panus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. pano: an ear of millet (Lewis & Short).

- [fungus] Lycogala globosum, rubrum, grani panici magnitudine, & forma, Pisas inter, & Liburnum, ad subera (Mich.), Lycogala globosum, red, with the size of a grain [i.e. seed] of panicum [i.e. millet], and its form, on cork-trees between Pisa and Liburnum.

- ‘Panicastrella’ dicitur quasi planta ad Panicum accedens (Mich.), the plant is called ‘Panicastrella’ as if it approaches in resemblance to [the genus] Panicum.
