A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Palate (Eng. noun), “the prominent lower lip of a ringent corolla” (Lindley); “1. the prominent lower lip of a ringent corolla; 2. the projection in the throat of a personate gamopetalous corolla” (Jackson); “a rounded projection of the lower lip of a personate corolla, closing the throat” (Fernald 1950): palatum,-i (s.n.II), also palatus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. palato 'the palate as the organ of taste or of speech;' also a vault;

- lobis deltoideis, apice rotundato, palato gibboso flavo, with lobes deltoid, with a rounded apex, with a gibbous yellow palate.

- palatum ínter labia, prominulum (Necker), the palate [i.e. vault or roof] between the lips somewhat prominent.

- faux, palato prominente clausa (Necker), the throat, shut up with a prominent palate.

- labio superiore maximo plicato lobis erectis ovato-lanceolatis acutis facie fere contiguis, inferiore obtuse trilobo palato aurantiaco intus ciliato (Boissier), with the upper lip most greatly plicate, with the lobes erect, ovate-lanceolate, acute, nearly contiguous with the face, the lober obtusely with a trilobed palate, orange, ciliate inside.

- labio superiore obtuse et breviter bifido, inferiore trifido, lobis minimis rotundatis aequalibus, palato luteo, calcare conico corollam subaequante (Boissier), with the upper lip obtusely and shortly bifid, the lower trifid, with the lobes very small, rounded equal [i.e. symmetric], with the palate yellow, with the conic spur almost equalling the corolla.

- labio superiore parum profunde bifido lobis obtusis, inferiore trilobo lobis obtusis subemarginatis , palato rubro-striato (Boissier), with the upper lip somewhat deeply bifid with the lobes obtuse, the lower three-lobed with the lobes obtuse, almost notched, with the palate red-streaked.

- [Iris] pistillum e fundo floris surgit tribus petalis instructum, fornicatis, & partibus floris deorsum inflexis, ita incumbentibus ut palati cujusdam speciem prae se ferant (Tourn.)the pistil arises from the floor of the flower, provided with three petals, arched [i.e. vaulted] and with the parts of the flower flexed inward on the back, [thus, and so] they are incumbent, so that they may exhibit a kind of palate [i.e. the roof of the mouth, a dome or vault].

NOTE: ferant: third-person plural present active subjunctive: they may, might carry, bear; see ferens,-entis (part.B).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
