Owl (Eng.noun): bubo,-onis (s.m.III), q.v.; #2: “an owl, the horned owl, Strix bubo, L. whose cry was considered as ill-boding” (Lewis & Short), “the horned or eagle owl, esp. as a bird of ill omen” (Glare); glaux, gen. sg. glaucis (s.f.III), the owl; glaucopis,-idis (s.f.III), abl. sg. glaucopide, gray-eyed (an epithet of Minerva), the owl; noctua,-ae (s.f.I), an owl, the night-owl, a bird sacred to Minerva; otus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., abl.sg. oto: a kind of owl, the horned owl (Pliny); strix,-igis (s.f.III), q.v., abl.sg. strige, the screech-owl; tyto-, tyton-, q.v.: in Gk. comp. 'owl' [< Gk. tytO, an owl].

Strix,-igis (s.f.III), L. (1758), abl.sg. strige, Earless owl, Wood owl (family Strigidae).

Tyto,-onis (s.f.III), abl.sg. Tytone: a genus of owls (family Tytonidae), a monotypic family of owls (Barn owls).
