Otus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. oto: = Gk. Otos, a kind of owl, the horned owl (Pliny) (Lewis & Short) [> Gk. Otos,-ou(s.m.II): a horned or eared owl”[first ‘o’ is an omega] (Liddell & Scott); apparently from Gk. ous, -otos (s.n.III) as other words, such as OtOeis,-essa,-en (Gk. adj.) “with ears or handles,” refers to ears, the stem of ous is Ot (omega)]; see ‘owl;’ see birds; cf. strix, gen.sg. striges (s.f.III).

Otus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. Oto, a genus of small-eared owls (family Strigidae). The generic name Otus was proposed by Thomas Pennant in 1769 for the Indian scops owl (O. bakkamoena) [Wikipedia “Skops owl”].

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
