A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Otis, gen.sg. Otidos (s.f.III): “from its long ear feathers, genus = type genus of the family Otididae: a bustard. The only species is Otis tarda; Latin Otis,-idos (s.f.III), > Gk. Otis,-idos (s.f.III; initial omega), “a kind of bustard with long ear-feathers, probably the great bustard” (Liddell & Scott) > Gk. ous, gen.sg. Otos, ‘ear;’ see ‘ear.’ Family: Otididae (Otid- + -idae; NOT Otidae); “a family of Old World birds [in dry grasslands and steppes], comprising the bustards” (WIII); see birds.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
