A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Murex,-icis (s.m.III), abl.sg. murice, nom. & acc. murices: the murex; “the purple-fish; The Tritons used the shell as a tuba; the shells were also used for holding liquids. And for adorning grottos; the purple dye, purple, made from the juice of the purple-fish; a caltrop, with sharp points in every direction” (Lewis & Short). Source of a “royal purple” dye (Tyrian purple);

- Ibidem & animalia visendae magnitudinis: in Exanguibus aquaticis testaceis Murices, Buccina aliaque portentosae molis innumera nascuntur (Ray), in the same place arise animals for the observing of magnitude: among the aquatic bloodless [sc. animals], the aquatic testaceous Murexes, the Buccina [i.e. Welks] and countless others of monstrous hugeness.

[mollusca] Murex,-icis (s.m.III) a genus of tropical sea snails (family Muricidae); Murex indicus; M. minutus; M. paradoxicus.
