A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Mesentery: “a supporting membrane or membranes enfolding some internal organ and attaching it to the body wall or to another organ’ (Webster’s New World Dictionary); “any fold of membrane supporting a viscus (as the heart or an ovary) that is not a part of the digestive tract ... specifically the membranes connected with the jejunum and ileum in man” (WIII): mesenterium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. mesenterio, also mesenterion,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. mesenterio [> Gk. mesenterion, mesenteron, mesos- ‘middle’ + enteron, ‘intestine,’ “middle intestine;” “(sc. derma) membrane to which the intestines are attached” (Liddell & Scott)]; see intestine;

- [Lichenoides maritimum gelatinosum crassum, intestinorum gyros referens “The curl’d fleshy Sea Lichenoides” [the thick, gelatinous marine Lichenoides resembling the convolutions of intestines]];

Crassum est & breve, solidum seu non cavum, varie sinuosum, intestinorum & mesenterii gyros referens, substantiæ durioris gelatinosæ, instar cartilaginis vel tendinis diu decocti (Dill.), it is thick and short, solid or not hollow, variously sinuose, calling to mind [i.e. resembling] the convolutions of the intestines and mesentery, the gyres [i.e. convolutions], of a harder gelatinous substance, resembling cartilage or tendon when cooked down for a long time.

Enteron (s.n.II),-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. entero, nom.&acc. pl. entera, gen.pl. enterorum, dat. & abl.pl. enteris: “piece of the guts or intestines; often in the pl. entera: guts, bowels” (Liddell & Scott); see -enteron.
