A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Magma,-atis (s.n.III), abl. sg. magmate; = Gk. magma, “the dregs of an unguent” (Lewis & Short) [Gk. magma,-atos (s.n.III): “thick unguent, esp. magma (h)Edychroun, an ingredient in the Theriaca Andromachi; also a plaster” (Liddell & Scott)]; see unguentum,-i (s.n.II);

- faecem unguenti magma appellant, they call ‘magma’ the sediment [i.e. dregs] of an unguent or ointment.

- [Synalissa meladermia; lichen] Simul initia Scytonematum inspersa adsunt, quare haec formatio haud parum magma dubium fìngere videtur (Nyl.), simultaneously, the [cell] initials of Scytonema are present, interspersed, for which reason this formation [i.e. development] seems to fabricate a not insignificant doubtful [i.e. uncertain] ointment [i.e. a smooth, oily lotion or soft grease; a gelatinous substance].

Gloeocapsa magma, kingdom bacteria; phylum Cyanobacteria: Gloeocapsa magma is a species of freshwater cyanobacteria, a photosynthesizing bacterium. The species is gelatinous, hence, perhaps, the epithet ‘magma.’

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
