A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Isatis,-is (s.f.III), abl.sg. isate, also isatis,-idis (s.f.III), abl.sg. isatide: “the plant woad, Isatis tinctoria” (Glare); = Gk. (latinized) isatis,-idis (s.f.III), abl. sg. isatide: “a plant producing a dark blue dye, ‘woad, Lat. Isatis tinctoria” (Liddell & Scott). However, in Lewis & Short, isatis,-is and –idis (s.f.III) = Gk. isatis, an herb with a milky juice, used in healing wounds (Pliny 20, 7, 25 paragraph 59.” (Lewis & Short).

Perhaps the Greek entry is an anachronism reflecting the modern generic name Isatis L. after Tournef. 100; see indigo (Eng.noun); see woad (Eng.noun).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
