Insigne,-is (s.n.III), abl. sg. insigne, nom. & acc. pl. insignia: a visible characteristic or distinguishing mark; “a mark, sign, signal; a distinctive mark, a badge of office; a sign or badge of office or honor; (in plural) insignia, attire, uniform, costume; a standard; a signal; an honor (Lewis & Short); a visible token, emblem, symbol; a mark of honor; “something worn or carried as an indication of rank, status, identity, etc.; [a visible, distinguishing mark, characteristic; an outward or visible token, emblem, symbol; symbolic representation” (after Glare); cf. nota,-ae (s.f.I);

- insigne nocturnum, a night-signal;

- insignia,-orum, a badge or badges.

- [fungus] Novembri mense, in horto medico insignis Nosocomii Sanctae Мariae Novae Florentiae, super fimi equini tumulos. (Mich.), in the November month, in the medicinal garden of the sign [i.e. emblem] of the hospital of Santa Maria Nova of Florence.

A (commercial or mercantile) ‘sign, mark, symbol;’ - apud Martinum Iuuenem, via S. Ioannis Laterranensis, ad insigne Serpentis, = “at the shop of Martin Le Jeune, Rue Sainct Jean de Latran, at the sign of the serpent” (Maxwell 1998). - apud Ioan. Bellerum, sub insigni Falconis, = “at the shop of Jean Berrer, under the sign of the Falcon” (Maxwell 1998). - Londini: Impensis Henrici Faitborne, & Joannis Kersey ad insigne Rosae in Coemeterio D. Pauli (Ray), at London: at the expense of Henry Faitborne & John Kersey, at the sign of the Rose at the Cemetery of Saint Paul [i.e. St. Paul’s Churchyard]. - Londini: Typis Mariae Clark: Prostant apud Henricum Faithorne & Joannem Kersey ad insigne Rosae in Coemeterio D. Pauli, & e regione aedium Bedfordiensium in vico ‘the Strand’ dicto (Ray); in London: at the print-shop of Maria Clark: sold [i.e. offered for sale] at the establishment of Henry Faithorne & Joannes Kersey at the sign of the Rose in the Cemetery of Saint Paul, and from the district of the [print-] shops of Bedford, in the quarter called ‘the Strand.’
