A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Insertion, in leaves, the point of attachment, the mode or place of attachment of an organ or part; “the manner in which one part is inserted into or adheres to, or originates from another” (Lindley); (bryophytes) “the place or line of attachment of a structure; applied to leaves and branch on a stem, peristome, etc.” (Magill 1990); (fungi) “the manner or place of attachment of a stipe to the pileus” (S&D): insertio,-onis (s.f.III), abl.sg. insertione; see ‘attachment, point of;’

- folia base late ovata ad insertionem vaginans, leaves at the base broadly ovata at the insertion sheathing.

- paleis ad insertionem infuscatis, with scales (pales) at the insertion darkened.

- insertione folii in dimidio dorsali distincte succuba, with the leaf insertion in the dorsal half distinctly succubous.

- folia insertione obliqua vel transversa, leaves with the insertion oblique to transverse.

- sepalis basi solutis seu ultra insertionem deorsum longe productis (DeCandolle), with the sepals freed at the base or long-extended downwardly beyond the insertion.

- foliis lateralibus nervo medio ad petioli insertionem (DeCandolle), with the leaves lateral with a middle nerve, on the insertion of the petiole.

- [Bryum; moss] theca propria illi Br. atropurpurei similis sed ad insertionem pedunculi torosa veluti coronata (C. Mueller), the characteristic theca is similar to that of Bryum atropurpureum, but it is as if crowned at the insertion of the peduncle [i.e. seta] with a protuberance.

incubus,-a,-um (adj.A): "incubous, obliquely inserted on the stem so that the leaf edge nearest the shoot-tip overlaps and thus covers the lower edge of the leaf above" (Stearn); see incubus,-a,-um (adj.A).

succubus,-a,-um (adj.A): succubous, i.e. obliquely inserted on the stem so that the leaf-edge nearest the shoot-tip is overlapped by and covered by the lower edge of the leaf above (Stearn);

Medullary insertions, “(obs.) the medullary processes of Exogens” (Lindley): insertio (s.f.III) medullaris, abl. sg. insertione medullari; nom. & acc. pl. insertiones medullares.
