A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Infundibulum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. infundibulo: infundibulum, (diatoms), lit. a funnel; (in diatoms) “the broad, funnel-shaped, perforate inward extension of the calyptra at the opposite end of the frustule from the epicalve face. It is supported by the terminal ends of the fala and appears to attach to the calyptra and lacinia without overlap or suture. A circular opening to the interior of the frustule is present at the center of the infundibulum and appears to be covered by a siliceous plate (infundibular operculum) of slightly larger diameter than the central opening” (from the Diatom Wiki,

- Florum simplicium monopetalorum differentia desumuntur ab eorum forma, Campaniformes, a campana; ab infundibulo, Infundibuliformes (Tourn.), the differentiae [i.e. distinguishing traits] of the simple [i.e. not compound] monopetalous flowers are selected from their shape; the Campaniformes, from a bell; from an infundibulum [i.e. a funnel] the Infundibuliformes.

Funnel (Eng. noun): “a utensil that has typically the shape of a hollow cone with a tube extending from the point” (WIII).

Funnel (Eng. noun; botany): “in Marsiliaceae, a space below the thick outer coats of the macrospore into which the apical papilla projects (Goebel)” (Jackson).
