A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Hypocarpium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. hypocarpio: hypocarp; “an anlarged growth of the peduncle beneath the fruit, as in Anacardium” (Jackson) [> Gk. [h]ypo, under + carpium, dim. karpos, fruit)].

- [Oncocarpus; Anacardiaceae] drupa hypocarpio brevi insidens (B&H), the drupe seated upon [+ dat.] a short hypocarp.

- [Anacardium; Anacardiaceae] nux reniformis, sinu laterali umbilicata, hypocarpio máximo pyriformi carnoso e toro basique calycis ampliati constante insidens, indehiscens, pericarpio crasso intus celluloso oleifero (B&H), nut kidney-shaped [q.v.], umbilicate with a lateral sinus, regularly seated upon a strongly pyriform, fleshy hypocarpium from the torus and base of the enlarged calyx, indehiscent, with a thick pericarp, inside, cellulose, oil-bearing.

- [Oncocarpus; Anacardiaceae] drupa compressa et depressa, deformis, basi calycis lati brevis carnosi (hypocarpio) insidens, endocarpio osseo rugoso tuberculato intus lobato, 1-locularis (B&H), drupe compressed and depressed, misshapen, situated at the base of the short broad calyx (the hypocarpium), with the endocarpium bony, rugose, tuberculate, lobed inside, 1-locular.

"When we speak of the situation of the germen [i.e. ovary], we must be understood to mean its situation with respect to the calyx, for there may be, instances of the germen beiug encircled by the calyx, and yet being situated below the corolla. It is only in absence of the calyx that the situation is determined by the other parts. Germen superum is also expressed by Flos epicarpius, or Flos superus; and Germen inferum by Flos hypocarpius, or Flos inferus.” (Willdenow).

Hypocarpus: (Olaceae) = Liriosma, Papp. et Endl. Nov. Gen. et Sp. iii. 33. t. 239. (Hypocarpus, A. DC. Prod. viii. 245 et 673. Dulacia, Vell. Fl. Flum. i. t. 78.)— (B&H).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
