A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Holocaustum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. holocausto; holocautoma,-atis (s.n.III), abl.sg. holocautomate: (eccles.): “holocaust, burnt offering” (Stelten); “a burnt sacrifice; a sacrificial offering wholly consumed by fire; a complete or thorough sacrifice or destruction esp. by fire” (WIII) [> Gk. holokauston, neut. of holokaustos, ‘burnt whole’]; see hypocaustum,-i (or hypocauston,-i) (s.n.II);

- [Dematium ollare; fungus]:

The following passage is from S&A:

- ad terram ollarum hyemalium in holocaustis asservatarum hinc inde (S&A), on the soil of protected winter pots heaped into a ‘burnt offering’ (i.e. holocaust). Perhaps the word hypocaust (hypocaustum,-i (s.n.II), q.v., or nursery ‘vaporarium’ is meant; see vaporarium,-ii (s.n.II). The fungus is said by the authors to grow in Jan. and Febr.

Other references to this species [= Dematium fulva] is said to grow “in vaporariis, terram ollarum investiens,” that is, in vaporaria, or the heating stoves of nurseries, covering the soil of pots. The pots are nursery pots, and the ‘soil’ is potting soil.

Dematium ollare: “habitat in hortis et vaporariis ad ollas plantarum,” it grows in gardens and vaporaria [i.e. heating stoves] on the pots of plants [i.e. on nursery pots].

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
