“In ancient times, leaves and young branches from sea buckthorn were supposedly fed as a remedy to horses to support weight gain and appearance of the coat, leading to the name of the genus, Hippophae derived from the Greek hippo (horse), and phaos (shining)” Li TSC (2002) in Janick, J. & A. phaos, gen.sg. phaeos (s.n.III), Attic contraction = phOs, gen.sg. phOtos; “light, esp. daylight; a day, the light (of a torch, lamp, fire, etc.; the light (of the eyes); a window” (after Liddell & Scott). See also (h)ippophaes,-eos (s.n.III): “a kind of spurge, Euphorbia spinosa, used for carding cloth; also (h)ippophaos.
