A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Gynandria,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. gynandria: a class of plants in the Linnæan system, whose stamens grow out of, or are united with, the pistil;

- Miror, CI. [F. H.] WIGGERS in Primitiis florae Holsaticae, hocce gramen Classi Gynandriae inservisse quod a veritate alienum. Certissime Triandrum eft, filamentis juxta basin germinis insidentibus; sed ille forsitan vidit stamina pistillo adglutinata, ut in spiculis quibusdam interdum contingit (Swartz), I wonder if the most noted Wiggers in the Florae Primitiae Holsaticae [Beginnings of a Flora of Holstein [1780], had inserted this very grass into the Class Gynandria, because it is foreign from the truth. It is most certainly Triandrum [a triandrous genus], with the filaments situated next to the base of the ovary; but he perhaps saw the stamens adhered to the pistil, as sometimes happens in certain spikelets.

- Gynandris olim adnumeratae fuerunt, Sterculia, floribus hermaphroditis in quibusdam speciebus praedita, etiam inter illos locum tenet, ideoque una cum illis in Monadelphiam migrare debet (Swartz), the [mentioned genera, Passiflora, Kleinhovia] were once included in the Gynandria, Sterculia, furnished with hermaphroditic flowers in certain species, also holds a place among them, and for this reason together with those [genera] ought to migrate into the Monadelphia.

NOTE: Triandria, a Linnaean class of three-stamened plants [Jackson]; a Linnaean class of plants having three distinct and equal stamens: triandria,-ae (s.f.I).“ The third class of plants in the sexual system of Linnæus. It comprises those plants which have hermaphrodite flowers with three distinct and equal stamens, as the crocus, the valerian, and almost all the grasses. It comprehends three orders, Monogynia, Digynia, and Trigynia. Triandria is also the name of several orders in other classes of the Linnean system, the plants of which orders have three stamens.” [Free Dictionary 2014].
