A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Grape (the fruit): an individual grape, a bunch or cluster of grapes, uva,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., abl. sg. uva; (individually) acinus,-i (s.m.II), see below, abl. sg. acino, acinum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. acino; venucula,-ae (s.f.I), a kind of grape; see vitis, gen. sg. vitis (s.f.III);

- [Vitis vinifera] acinis rubris pallidis aut albis, aquosis aut carnosis, globosis ovatis ant oblongis, saccharatis moschatis aut subacerbis; (DeCandolle), with the berries [or berry-bunches] red, pale or white, watery [i.e. full of water] or fleshy, globose, ovate or oblong, sugary, musky or somewhat sour.

acinarius,-a,-um (adj.A): (classically) pertaining to the grape (Lewis & Short); “when a stem is covered with vesicles resembling grape-seeds [> L. acinus, q.v., a grape-seed (Jackson)].

acinose, like grapes, or of granular bodies resembling them” (Jackson): acinosus,-a,-um (adj.A) [> L. acinus, q.v., a grape-seed (Jackson)].

Acinus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. acino, and acinum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. acino, particularly in the plur. acina,-orum, [classically] a berry, esp. the grape; the stone of a berry (Lewis & Short); Jackson’s Latin for acinus = “a grape-seed.” Acinus: “a bunch of fleshy fruits: as of currants or grapes. Now confined to the berries of such bunches” (Lindley). ‘Acine, Acinus’ = “a single member of such fruits, as the raspberry; a drupel, druplet; formerly used for a bunch of fruit, as of grapes” (Jackson).

Botrus,-i (s.f.II), abl.sg. botro: botrus (Crozier) = Botrys (Jackson) {> L. botrus,-i (s.m.II, abl.sg. botro = botrys, the grape (Lewis & Short). NOTE: the feminine gender of botrus,-i (s.f.I).

Grapes, like a cluster of: botryoideus,-a,-um (adj.A), uvarius,-a,-um (adj.A), uviformis,-e (adj.B) i.e. with clustered rounded parts; cf. botry-; see bunched.
grape-bearing: uvifer,-fera,-ferum (adj.A).
