Goat (Eng.noun): caper, gen. sg. capri (s.m.II), abl. sg. capro: a he-goat, a goat; the odor of the armpits; capra,-ae (s.f.I): a she-goat; caprea,-ae (s.f.I), a kind of wild she-goat; hirculus,-i (s.m.II), a little goat; hircus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., a he-goat, buck; aeg-, aego-, aegi-: in Gk. comp. a goat [> Gk. aix, gen.sg. aigos (s.m.f.III): a goat; Lat. caper, capra]; cf. Aegilops,-opis (s.f.III).

NOTE: billy goat (Eng.noun) is a male goat; nanny goat (Eng.noun) is a female goat.

Aex, gen.sg. aegis (s.m/f III), abl.sg. aege = Gk. aix [ksi], gen.sg. aigos (s.m/f III), ‘a she-goat;’ see aex, gen.sg. aegis [prefix aeg-, aego-, aegi-, q.v.: in Gk. comp. a goat.

Chimaera,-ae (s.f.I), q.v. = Gk. chimaira, lit. a goat [> Gk. chimaera (s.f.I): a (young) she-goat, often used in sacrifices; the Chimaera, “a fire-breathing monster; mythical for a volcano in Lycia; “chimaeros (s.m.II), a he-goat” (Liddell & Scott).

Haedus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. haedo, a young goat, a kid.

Haedulus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. haedulo: a little kid.

Tragus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., abl.sg. trago: ‘goat; = Lat. hircus, q.v.

NOTE: (Rupicapra rupicapra), the ‘rock-goat,’ the chamois, is a small agile goatlike antelope that lives on the loftiest mountain ridges of Europe and in the Caucasus (WIII).

NOTE: capreola,-ae (s.f.I), dim. caprea,-ae (s.f.I), q.v. the female roe deer; capreolus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. capreola, dim. caprea, q.v,. a kind of wild goat, chamois, roebuck; of vines; the small tendrils that support the branches; see deer; see tendril.

Aegilops,-opis (s.f.III), abl. sg. Aegilope L., Goat-Grass, “Name used by Theophrastus for a kind of wild oat” (Fernald 1950) [> Gk. aigilOps,-Opos (s.m.III); cf. aigilos (s.f.II), “a herb of which goats are fond, = aigilOps” (Liddell & Scott)].

Aegiphila, Linn. A favourite of goats, hence the name, aix, a goat, and philos, dear. Verbenaceae (Paxton).
