A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Gangraena,-ae (s.f.I): gangrene, ‘putrefaction or necrosis of soft tissues’ caused by absence of a supply of blood; “a disease ending in putrid decay” (Lindley); “gangrene (Eng.noun) = Gk. gangraina, an eating ulcer), a disease ending in putrid decay” (Jackson) [> L. gangraena,-ae (s.f.I) > Gk. gangraina [two gammas], a cancerous, eating ulcer on the body, a gangrene” (Lewis & Short); (in Pliny) “Gangrene, hard to distinguish from ‘phagedaena’ and ‘ulcera serpentia” (Jones); see carcinoma,-atis (s.n.III); see ulcus, gen.sg. ulceris (s.n.III).

- gangraena herpestica, an eating [i.e. cancerous] ulcer [i.e. necrosis] [see herpesticus,-a,-um (adj.A)].

Phagedaena,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., (in Pliny) “gangrene, hard to distinguish from ‘gangraena.’ In XXVI 10 an abnormal diseased appetite” (Jones).
