A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Gallina,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. gallina: a hen, fowl; see chicken.

Gallina Numidica, gen.sg. Gallinae Numidicae: a guinea-fowl.

- anatum ova gallinis saepe supponimus, we often lay the eggs of ducks under hens.

- planta est valde calida, quam gallinis ad parienda ova vorandam dant inquilini (Dill.), the plant is very hot, which the inhabitants say is for preparing the eggs of hens for eating.

- Alsine media C. B. Pin. 250. = Alsine vulgaris sive Morsus Gallina (Tourn.), Alsine media C. B. Pin. 250. = Alsine vulgaris or Hen Bite [Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule L.)]

- [Poraqueiba; Olacineae] fructus in P. sericea magnitudine ovi gallinae, edulis (B&H), the fruit in P. sericea with the size of a chicken egg, edible.

- Novembri mense, super gallinarum fimo enatum vidimus (Mich.), in the November month, we have seen it arisen on the excrement of chickens.
