A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Galea (Eng.noun), the helmet-shaped or hood-like upper lip of some two-lipped corollas, as in the flowers of the genus Pedicularis (Scrophulariaceae); “a hooded or helmet-shaped portion of a perianth, as the upper sepal of Aconitum and the upper lip of some bilabiate corollas” (Fernald 1950); “the helmet or arched part of a flower, always placed at the back; that is, next to the axis” (Lindley); “a petal shaped like a helmet, placed next to the axis, as in Aconitum” (Jackson); a hollow, vaulted structure: galea,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. galea, nom.pl. galeae, acc.pl. galeas, dat. & abl.pl. galeis [> L. galea,-ae (s.f.I): a generally leather helmet, q.v.]; cf. calcar,-aris (s.n.III), a spur; cf. cucullus,-i (s.m.II); cf. fornix,-icis (s.m.III); see gibbus,-i (s.m.II) which in some instances may be synonymous with galea;

- Labium superius: a duabus laciniis lateralibus superioribus erectis & galea, continetur. Galea laciniis minor, ovata, fornicata, deflexa, supra carinata (Swartz); the upper labium: from two lateral laciniae the upper erect and contained by the galea. The lower galea with laciniae, ovate, arched, deflexed, keeled above.

- petala tria exteriora: Unum superius medium (Galea) fornicatum, erectum, 3-carinatum: duo lateralia subreflexa, ovato lanceolaca, carinata, (Swartz), petals three, the outer: one [petal] above the middle (the galea), vaulted, erect, 3-keeled, the two lateral somewhat reflexed, ovate-lanceolate, keeled.

- nectarium postice sub galea, fornicatum, medio 3-anguIare, lateribus loculare, in duo cornua porrecta antice divisum (Swartz), ), the nectarium postically under the galea, arched, 3-angled in the middle, antically divided into two extended horns.

- petala 2-5 , parva, 2 superiora longe unguiculata, apice cucullata, sub galea recondita, 3 inferiora minima v. obsoleta (B&H), the petals 2-5, small, the 2 upper long-clawed, cucullate [i.e. hooded], hidden under the galea.

- petala 2 superiora(cuculli, nectaria) longe unguiculata apice in saccum expansa sub galea recondita (DeCandolle), petals 2, the upper ones (the cuculli, the nectariums) long-unguiculate, at the apex expanded into a sack hidden under the galea.

- sepala persistentia, galea conica vel subsemicircularis (DeCandolle), the sepals persistent, the galea conic or somewhat semicircular.

NOTE: mitra,-ae (s.f.I): “the galea of a corolla” (Jackson). Galeandra paraguayensis Cogn.
