A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Fluvius,-ii (s.m.II), abl. sg. fluvio: 'flowing water;' a river or stream (not so frequently used as flumen); the stream or current of a river; see creek; cf. profluvium,-ii (s.n.II), out-pouring, debouchment; see river;

NOTE: in Australia often applied to creeks.

NOTE: abbrev. fluv.

NOTE: one would assume that occasionally the abbrev. 'fl.' indicates this noun, as well as flumen, q.v.; in the plural it probably means ‘streams;’ see river; see rivus,-i (s.m.II), brook, creek, small stream;

- arbor elegantissima ripas fluviorum obumbrans (Desf.), a most elegant tree overshadowing the banks of rivers.

- ad ripas glareosas fluviorum Victoriae, Hooker's Creek et Sturt's Creek, eorum originem versus, nuspiam frequens (F.Muell.), on the gravelly beaches of the small streams of Victoria, Hooker’s Creek and Sturt’s Creek, toward their headwaters, nowhere frequent.

- per tractus montium et fluviorum Americae aequinoctialis, through the region of mountains and rivers of Equatorial America (Stearn).

- ad cataractas fluvii Negro, at cataracts of the Rio Negro (Stearn).

- species intertropicae littora limosa ad aestuaria fluviorum vegetatione arborea insalubri dense obumbrant, the intertropical species the muddy shores at the estuaries of rivers with unhealthy woody vegetation densely cover over (Stearn).

- in pratis collinis et ripariis a fluvia Burdekin usque ad rivum Brisbane (F. Muell.), in the hilly and riverside meadows from the river Burdekin to the Brisbane river.

NOTE: both are important rivers in Australia, the Brisbane the longest in southeast Queensland.

- fluvius Eurotas, the Eurotas river (classical).

- ad ripas glareosas fluviorum Victoriae, Hooker's Creek et Sturt's Creek, eorum originem versus, nuspiam frequens (F. Muell.), on the gravelly beaches of the small streams of Victoria, Hooker’s Creek and Sturt’s Creek, toward their headwaters, nowhere frequent.

- Cygnorum Fluvius: Swan River, Western Australia; Sontius Fluvius: Isonzo River, northern Italy.

- aquis purioribus quietis stagnorum et lacuum, rarius fluviorum Hypnum fluitans innatat, Hypnum fluitans floats in the clearer, quiet waters of swamps and lakes, more rarely of running water (rivers).

- e vallibus graniticis fluviorum Snowy-River et Mitta Mitta (F. Mueller), from the granitic valleys of the streams of the Snowy River and Mitta Mitta.

- ad ripas granitico-arenosas fluviorum Lachlan (F. Mueller), on the granitic-sandy banks of the Lachlan streams.

- species intertropicae littora limosa ad aestuaria fluviorum vegetatione arborea insalubri dense obumbrant, the intertropical species the muddy shores at the estuaries of rivers with unhealthy woody vegetation densely cover over (Stearn).

- in locis ripariis ad partes fluvii Victoria superiores nec non in plaga elevata (Table land) ad originem rivi Sturt's Creek (F. Mueller), in riparian places in the upper parts of the Victoria river and also in the elevated region (Table land) at the source of the stream Sturt’s Creek.

- in clivis rupestribus passim irriguis et circum fontes prope originem fluviorum Limmen-bight et Roper River (C. Mueller), in on rocky slope everywhere watered and around springs near the headwaters of the rivers limmen-bight and Roper River.

- in pulvinis muscorum ad cataractas et fontes rupium altissimarum secus ripam superiorem sinistram fluvii Victoriae (F. Mueller), on pillows of mosses at the cataracts and springs of the highest rocks [i.e. cliffs] along the upper left bank of the river of Victoria.

- ad ripas fluviorum et clivos rupestres terrae Arnhemicae (F. Mueller), on the banks of rivers and rocky slopes of the Arnhhemic territory.
