A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Ericius,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. ericio: Lat. hedgehog; = the noun from which the Eng.word ‘urchin’ derives; in milit. lang. “a beam armed with sharp spikes to keep off assailants” (Lewis & Short) [> L. er, gen.sg. eris (s.m.III), q.v.]; see hedgehog (Eng.noun).

[Euphorbiaceae] Croton ericius: epithet = noun in apposition.

NOTE: the fungus genus Hericius, characterized by long, dangling spines, may suggest that a noun (h)ericius may be an alternative to the noun ericius, meaning ‘hedgehog,’ an animal with spines; cf. erinaceus,-i (s.m.II) and the alternative (h)erinaceus,-i (s.m.II).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
