Ductulus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. ductulo: ductule; a small duct; a small pipe, tube (tubule), channel or vessel by which fluids, gasses, air is conveyed; a tubular vessel [> L. dim. of ductus,-us (s.m.IV), q.v.]; see tubulus,-i (s.m.II).

NOTE: in mosses (Hedwig) fasciculus,-i (s.m.II) ductulorum [=gen.pl.] a strand, bundle or fascicle of little tubes = the costa (midrib, central nerve or vein of the leaf = a bundle of (conducting) ducts;

- folium fasciculo ductulorum, leaf with a fascicle [i.e. bundle] of ductules: i.e. with a costa, i.e. leaf costate.

- folia eductulosa, striis duabus tribusve longitudinalibus, una saepe ductulorum fasciculum mentiente (Hedw.), leaves ecostate, with two or three longitudinal stirae, one often falsely resembling a fascicle of ducts [i.e. a costa].

Schwaegrichen in Hedwig: the leaf ‘superficie’ or surface is flat, concave, canaliculate, carinate, undulate, striate or ductulose (having a strand of ductules, i.e. a costa or costae):

- [folium] ductulosum (Hedw.) fasciculo ductulorum instructum [leaf ductulose, i.e. costate, the leaf provided with a fascicle of ductules (tubules).

The moss fascicle of ductules are:

a. simplici [i.e. unbranched or undivided]:

i. brevissimo vel rudimento tantum fasciculi instructum ([e.g.] Hypnum purum) [single: i. extremely short or provided only with a rudiment of a fascicle]

ii. apicem non attingente [fascicle not reaching the apex].

iii. apicem attingente [fascicle reaching the apex]

iv. Supra basin in ramos duos diviso, seu furcato: Neckera hypnoides [fascicle divided above the base into two branches, or furcate (forked)].

b. duplici: Leskea depressa. [fascicle double]

c. triplici: Hypnum albicans. [fascicle triple]

- [folium] eductulosum Hedw. (exfasciculatum Bridelii) fasciculo ductulorum carens, leaf eductulose [i.e. without a costa] (the term ‘exfasciculate’ of Bridel), lacking a fascicle of ductules [i.e. a costa].

- [leaf] ductulose (Hedw.) [leaf ductulose, i.e. provided with a fascicle of ductules [costate].

- [the moss costa or midrib] ille nervus autem nihil aliud est quam caulis ductulorum succigerorum in folium productorum fasciculus (Bridel), that nerve, however, is nothing else than the bundle of small sap-bearing ductules of the stem projected into the leaf.

- [Weissia crispula] folia imbricata, e basi lanceolata, longius acuminata, acuminationis marginibus involutis, canaliculata, ductulorum fasiculo instructa Hedw.): leaves imbricate, lanceolate from the bae, more longly acuminate, involute by the margins of the acumination, canaliculate, provided with a costa (fascicle of ducts).

Folium eductulosum Hedw. (exfasciculatum Bridelii) fasciculo ductulorum carens; eductulose (the non fasciculatum of Bridel): lacking a fascicle of ducts.

- folia eductulosa (Hedw.), leaves ecostate.

- Hypnum trunco pinnato ramoso, ramis per folia eductulosa apice convoluta acuminatis (Hedw.), a Hypnum with the stem pinnate, full of branches, with the branches acuminate due to the ecostate leaves convolute at the apex.

Folia semiductulosa: with the costa in the [lower] half of the leaf;

- Hypnum cirrosum, Caule procumbente vage ramoso, foliis imbricatis ovatis longe acuminatis semiductulosis (Schwaegr.), Hypnum cirrosum, with the stem procumbent, irregularly branched, with the leaves imbricate, ovate, long-acuminate semiductulose [i.e. with the costa in the [lower] half of the leaf].
