NOTE: the synonyms vary through time depending on whether the fruit is considered inferior or superior.

(“inferior syncarpous fruits: with a dry dehiscent pericarp: “When a fruit resembles the ordinary capsule in every respect, except that it is inferior, as in the species of Iris and Campanula, it has received the name of Diplotegia. In the natural orders we shall describe such fruit as capsular.” “This is the only kind of inferior fruit which presents a dry dehiscent pericarp. ... [it] differs in nothing from [the Capsule] except in being inferior. ... The diplotegia may open either by pores, valves or transversely like the ordinary capsule. In the latter case, as with the true capsule with transverse dehiscence, the fruit is called a Pyxis” (Bentley).

Diplotegium,-ii (s.n.II),genus named by Corda (1845); type: Diplotegium brownianum.
