A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Cotula,-ae (s.f.I); also cotyla,-ae (s.f.I): = Gk. kotylE, “a small vessel, as a measure, equal to a hemina or half a sextarium” (Lewis & Short); see cotyl.

Cotula,-ae (s.f.I): generic “name from the Latin ‘cotula,’ after the Greek ‘cotyle,’ a small cup; alluding to the hollow at the base of the amplexicaul leaves” (Fernald 1950); “Greek word meaning a small cup. The bases of the leaves of these small herbs form cups”(Stearn 1996); Asteraceae.

Anthemis cotula L. [“early united with the genus Cotula” (Fernald 1950)], (Mayweed, Maruta Cotula, (pharm.) “a species of chamomile possessing the properties common to its class (i.e. Anthemis flores), but having a very disagreeable odor” (Sweringen 1882); Asteraceae.
